- Flower of the month: Dahlia

Dahlia
The dahlia is an incredibly versatile flower with many colour and shape variations. Sometimes the petals are solid in colour, but often strikingly bright with speckles or stripes. Some flowers have a single row of petals, while others consist of dozens of petals. To show you this diversity, we visited FAM Flower Farm. This is a nursery where you can admire more than 200 varieties.

Origin of the dahlia
The dahlia is originally a Mexican tuberous plant. With the 'discovery' of America around 1800, the dahlia was brought to Europe. Here, the leafy bulb was named after the Swedish botanist Andreas Dahl, a pupil of Linnaeus. Since 1813, the dahlia has been produced by professional growers.
Colours and shapes of the dahlia
The most striking feature of the dahlia is its petals: sometimes solid in colour, but often strikingly bright with speckles or stripes. Some flowers have one row of petals, while others consist of dozens. The beautiful flower has exaggerated colour and shape variations. For instance, the petals are round, spiky or coiled. There are dahlias that are as long as 1.5 metres and have a flower diameter of more than 20 cm. In short: striking appearances!
FAM Flower Farm
There is only one place you can think of where you can see so many different dahlias together in the field, and that is at the FAM Flower Farm. This nursery was set up by two friends, Marlies and Linda. Both married to growers. For years, they saw their husbands cultivating tubers and bulbs. But with whom these bulbs eventually blossomed, they did not know.
And they found that a pity. So they decided to join forces in FAM Flower Farm. FAM stands for family and for feminine. They wanted to connect directly with flower lovers with their feminine touch.

They started spreading their love for all those amazing flowers on Instagram, through a website with lots of inspiration and a webshop. And that caught on! Thousands of flower lovers suddenly knew how to find them. The 'colourful flower posts' were enthusiastically received and people started ordering bulbs and tubers in their webshop to make all that colourful splendour bloom in their own gardens too. They visited the fields, shared their photos with their supporters and that's how Marlies and Linda managed to reach a lot of flower fans very quickly. They could suddenly ask questions directly and discover what people love. And: answer questions, give them ideas, tips.
Dahlia in the style trend Recentered Stage
During our visit to the FAM Flower Farm, we feasted our eyes. We went into the field and were able to pick beautiful dahlias, with which our client Conny Klaver made beautiful creations. Like, for example, this colourful arrangement consisting of only dahlias.
This arrangement also fits nicely with the style trend Recentered Stage. This Style trend makes great use of clear lines, geometric shapes and colourblocking. Something the dahlia lends itself well to.
