- Flower of the month: Clematis

Clematis
The Clematis was introduced as a cut flower in 2006, and has been loved by many florists ever since. The delicate petals catch the eye immediately. As designer Dmitry Turcan describes it so poetically: “The flower that floats over a bouquet like a butterfly fluttering over a flower meadow.” Want to find out more about these airy, romantic flowers with strong, flexible stems? Then read on.
Marginpar
Heemskerk Flowers has recently partnered with Marginpar. This nursery was founded in 1988, and focuses on special summer flowers. These flowers are grown with passion at the nurseries in Africa. Marginpar’s approach means they have a remarkable range of summer flowers available all year round. We are delighted that we now have short lines of communication with Marginpar and are therefore close to the source. One of Marginpar’s gems is the Clematis.
Breeding
Developing Clematises is a process that takes decades. After 10 years research and development, Clematis Amazing® Blue Pirouette was the first Clematis cut flower sold at Royal FloraHolland by Marginpar. It was five years before the next variety was introduced, but after that new varieties were added every year. Only the best were selected; the requirements are a good vase life (at least 10 to 14 days), strong stems and a unique appearance.
Developing a Clematis as a cut flower is a process that takes decades. It requires multiple rounds of testing, testing and more testing. You really do need to be amazing to merit the title. We would like to highlight two special varieties for you: Clematis Amazing® Sevilla and Clematis Amazing® Vienna.

Clematis Amazing® Sevilla
Each stem consists of four tulip-shaped flowers in duo tones. Sevilla has a creamy white colour inside, and a claret pink colour on the outside of its petals. These double tones are unique within the cut clematis family. Alongside its unusual shape and colour, the flowers also feel different. Whilst earlier varieties feel like soft, delicate paper, Clematis Amazing® Sevilla feels more intense and sturdy.

Clematis Amazing® Vienna
It took the breeders years and years, but ultimately they succeeded in making a Clematis in a colour of which Marginpar had been dreaming for years: white! Vienna has one large flower at the top and charming trailing leaves, but the most special aspect is the colour: its petals are white. A colour that had been sought for a very long time! Picture it: Clematis Amazing® Vienna in bridal work, in winter designs, or in a romantic bouquet with pastel or vintage colours. The possibilities are endless...

A flower like a butterfly
Dmitry Turcan - designer, inspirer, teacher and flower lover - talks about the Clematis, one of his favourite flowers: “A lot of people know about my love for Clematis. I use it constantly in my work. It brings life to bouquet, and also creates air and space. I always stress that you do need to know how to use Clematis. I think the clearest description of what Clematis should be in a bouquet looks like this: like butterflies fluttering over a flower meadow, Clematis must rise above all the other flowers. They are bright stars and bring friendly, romantic accents to any work.”
